What do all modal verbs have in common?

  • Modal verbs don’t add -s for the third person singular, so the form is always the same.

For example, She can swim.

NOT

She can swims.

  • The question form is created by inverting the subject and the verb. For example, Will you go?

5

  • We make the negative form by adding ‘not’. For example, They couldn’t attend the meeting.

  • They are followed by the verb without ‘to’. For example, "We might watch a movie."

We don't say; "We might to watch a movie."

6

  • They don’t have an infinitive form. When necessary we use another word.

For example,

She would like to be allowed to arrive ten minutes late.
