ELEMENTS OF LOGO DESIGN

Logos are among the most common symbols in our visual environment. We see them on television, on the Web, in billboards, in newspapers, in magazines, in

packaging, etc. They are printed on clothes, buses, notebooks, and so on. Many of

these logos have become famous and are a delight to see.

A well-designed logo makes an impact on our eyes and minds. To understand

what a logo is, we must first understand what the main purpose of logos is. The design process must aim to make the logo immediately recognizable, trustworthy, admirable, loyal and superior. The logo is one aspect of a company’s commercial brand or economic entity, and its shapes, colors, fonts, and images usually are strikingly different from other logos. Logos are used to identify and serve as a remarkable icon to a particular product or entity

Effective logo design, for example should consider the following elements:

a. SYMBOLS- Symbols instantly make people think of traits or message that they can associated with a company, group, product, or service. Through them, people find easier to recognize, identify, or recall images than texts.

13

b. COLORS- Color is very powerful. Looking at colors can make us feel happy, calm, or excited. Color can create varied emotions within customers. It is important to choose colors that best represent the character or identity of the company, organization, or service.

14

c. WORDS, TEXTS- In today’s fast-paced world, the most popular and successful companies continue to prefer logos with simple and easy-to- grasp texts. For many of them, it sometimes pay to just put the company name and slogan, in as few words as possible to send the message across. In this way, the logo is easier to see and remember.

15

d. SHAPES, SYMMETRY, BALANCE- The use of simple, geometric shapes like the triangle, square and circle are quite popular in logo design. Like simple text, using simple, neat, and easy-to-recognize geometric shapes can quickly impress a unique identity in the eyes of viewers.

16

e. FREE FORM- shapes also make use of basic shapes. Logo that are free form should not appear as if they are about to fall, loose, and unstable.

f. FONTS, TYPEFACE-The style of the lettering or typeface speaks a lot about the visual story of a logo.

17

g. PROPORTIONS, SIZE- Logos to be effective should be able to work across an array of media applications. They should be versatile and flexible for their many uses. Well-designed logos should look just as great on billboards, streamers, posters, clothes and stationaries.

18

h. UNIQUENESS AND INDIVIDUALITY- It is the wish of logo designer to create logos that are elegant, meaningful, and timeless. It must be a wonderful feeling to be able to create amazing logos.

19

CONCEPTS ON THE USE OF

SOFTWARE

20

Many drawing and image software programs are available to create digital logos. Some programs are downloadable or open source (Photo Illustrator, Inkscape) can be learned easily. Start to familiarize yourself with them. Practice makes perfect. Use their website tutorial as well. Figuring out how to use a software program starts with an understanding of all the features it contains. After you open your logo in one, several control panels appear on your desktop, one of which is long and narrow.

This toolbox or toolbar is full of features that are helpful to logo designers. Familiarize yourself with this toolbox. Here are the main tools and what they do:

o BURN TOOL- this tool darkens the image.

o CROP TOOL- it changes the size of the image.

o DODGE TOOL- it lightens an image.

o ERASER TOOL- it can erase part of the image in a certain layer.

o LASSO TOOL – it can select areas within a layer that cannot be reached with the Marquee tool.

o MARQUEE TOOL – this is a group of tools that allows you to select rectangles, ellipses, circles, squares.

o MOVE TOOL – this tool moves around all objects within a layer.

o PAINT BUCKET TOOL – this tool makes an area one color.

o PEN TOOL – it makes lines and can be used with shape tools to create different shapes.

o PENCIL TOOL AND BRUSH TOOL – these tools draw or paint a line.

23

o SPONGE TOOL – it soaks color out of the image.

o TYPE TOOL – it puts text in a picture.

o ZOOM TOOL – Zoom in on part of the picture for closer editing.

o GRADIENT TOOL - use this to highlight a color and make it fade from dark to light.

o AIRBRUSH TOOL – use this tool to create a soft spray and clouding effect.

o BLUR TOOL – use this tool to soften sharp edges.

o MEASURE TOOL - use this tool like a ruler.

o RUBBER STAMP TOOL – use this to replicate the same pattern or image

BASIC HARDWARE USED IN

MAKING LOGO

25

Set the equipment and tools in art skills using new technologies like hardware and software. Setting your own artwork from paper to computer is known as digitally formatting your art. To bring the artwork from paper to computer you need basic pieces of hardware like computer, scanner, digital tablet and stylus.

26

BASIC HARDWARE IN CREATING LOGO

1. Computer - Obviously, you need a computer and operating system to run on to create a digital painting. It is important that your computer is powerful enough to run software programs. Having as much Random-Access Memory (RAM) as you can is a feature to consider in successful digital painting. The more stored

application programs and operating system your computer has, the faster it can process things- like computer command as example.

2. Scanner - it is absolutely essential to digital painting. Without one, you cannot digitize your artwork. It is also useful for scanning textures -like real canvas and water color paper- to make texture supports (paper/canvas, etc.) or patterns which you can apply as backgrounds for paintings.

3. Digital Tablet and stylus -a real-world brush changes the way it deposits paint when

its shape changes. Push down on a brush tip and spread out the bristles. Make the

stroke larger and the shape 11 changes. Tilt brush and again the shape changes,

depositing paint in a different way. These features can now be done with varying

degrees of success using a pen stylus (pen tool) to make marks and digital tablet

to communicate directions to the computer.

27

CREATE PERSONAL OR CLASS LOGO AS VISUAL

REPRESENTATION

28

One of the most basic level logos are symbols. Each word, font color, shape, or image in great logo means or represents something. Logos, like symbols, convey a message, information, or embody ideas about that which it represents. In businesses where they are often employed, logos set companies, organizations, products, or services apart from each other. Logo aim to represent their message

29

Many times, shoppers are influenced by the logos’ visual appeal when they are looking for a particular product or service. For example, if you are shopping for a shoe, you need only to see the logo to know a lot about the footwear- the quality, manufacturer, price and perhaps even its famous endorser.

KINDS OF LOGO

1. Personal logo – are used to brand possessions, achievements, or even one’s identity. Simple but strong declarations such as “This is me”, “I own that”, “I made this”.

Examples:

doctor’s used caduceus engineers used compass and angle
