The number or variable in front of the parenthesis should be multiplied by EVERYTHING inside the parenthesis.
The answers should then be added or subtracted depending on what sign is in between the numbers.
Letters in an equation take the place of an unknown number
YOU CAN MULTIPLY THE NUMBERS IN FRONT OF LETTERS
YOU CAN'T ADD NUMBERS AND LETTERS TOGETHER
