Chapter 2 Assessment Review
by James Flowers
2
How do we solve Multi-step Equations?
- Simplify first
- Combine like terms
- Look over the equations &
decide the next step using inverse
operations
3
What do we mean by simplifying?
Evaluate parenthesis using Distributive Property.
Combine like terms on the same side of the equal symbol,
then over the equal symbol using inverse operations
4
How do I simplify using the Distributive Property?
Multiply the term on the outside of the parentheses times each term on the inside of the parentheses.
Drop the parentheses
5
It looks like this:
4(5x + 7) = 20x + 28
20x + 28 = 20x + 28
x = All Real #'s
6
Multiple Choice
Let's try this. Which answer shows an equivalent expression created with the Distributive Property?
8(5 + 7x)
40 + 56x
40 + 7x
40 - 56x
5 + 56x
7
Multiple Choice
Try another one. It can get tricky when there are negative integers.
-6(4x - 3)
-24x + 18
-24x - 18
24x + 18
-24 - 3
8
Multiple Choice
One More. What should we do when we only see a negative sign and no integer?
-(5 - 6y)
-5 + 6y
5 + 6y
-5 - 6y
9
How do I combine like terms on the same side of the equal sign?
- Add or subtract them as if the equal sign were not there.
- Remember that you should NOT use inverse operations or
opposites to combine like terms on the same side of the equal
sign.
10
It looks like this:
4x − 5 +3x = 7x − 5
11
Multiple Choice
Let's Try this. Which answer chioce best shows the correct way to combine like terms here?
5 - 7s - 2
3 - 7s
7s - 3
5 - 5s
12
Multiple Choice
Now let's apply it to an equation. What will this equation look like after you simplify?
4(2 + 3w) = 56
8 + 12w = 56
8+ 3w = 56
13
Multiple Choice
Now solve your simplified equation. What is the solution for
4(2 + 3w) = 56 ?
w = 4
w = 3
14
Multiple Choice
What will the equation look like after you have simplified?
-29 = 5(2a - 1) + 2a
-29 = 10a - 5 + 2a
-29 = 12a - 5
15
Notice there are variables on both sides.
The goal is to have the variables on one side of the equation while having the constants (numbers) on the other
x = "constant"
To do that, we remove as many of the x's as we can from both sides
16
Multiple Choice
How many x's (rectangles) can we remove from both sides?
1
2
3
4
17
18
After removing the 3 x's from both sides, what will the equation look like?
Do not use spaces.

19
Now we only have the variables on one side.
We can move on to solving equations like you are used to
By removing the constants (on both sides) so that we have the variable (x) by itself
20
Multiple Choice
How many onnes (yellow squares) can we remove from both sides?
