Grade 6A Primary and Secondary Sources

Review: Primary Sources

  • A primary source is something that was made at the time of the event.

  • In other words, it was made on the day in history in which it happened.

  • Examples can be a photo, taken on the day of an event, a diary entry that someone wrote, or a video made as something happened.

Speaking of handing things in...

  • Teachers like to know that you understand their lessons

  • I like to know how you are doing in class

  • Sometimes I don't get to talk to you in class because there are other things going on.

  • The only way I can see how you are doing, is if I mark your work

Question image

When it comes to handing in my classwork, I think that the reason the teacher asks me to hand it in is because:

1

She likes me

2

She wants something to do after school

3

She wants to see if I understood the lesson

4

She did not take attendance and this would help by checking who handed in their work.

9

Here is a fun fact!

Teachers look at student work so that they can tell if the student has understood the work.

The teacher does not always know what her students are capable of and by looking at their work, she can get a good idea.

Question image

What would happen in you never handed work in and the teacher did not know that you did not understand her lesson?

Hint: There is more than one answer.

1

Nothing

2

You might understand less and less as the rest of the class learnt more and more.

3

You might think you are the only one that did not understand the work

4

The teacher would never be able to leave you a message that explains the work that you did not understand.

11

What actually happens when you don't hand in work

When you don't hand work in, I don't know how much you have understood. It suggests to me that you understand everything. You get no help because there are not submissions for me to mark and leave notes on.

Then, you get a graded piece of work. You panic, because you didn't understand the first lesson, or the next three and now you have to get a grade. What to do now? You try your best and hand something in.

But, your grade is not good. It might be because your work does not answer what you needed to do, or you decided to copy and paste and got a zero because you don't get marks if you don't do the work.

12

What actually happens when you DO hand in work

When you hand in your work, it TELLS me that you know how to follow instructions. It TELLS me that you have done work on the keynote you are handing in and I should go and have a look.

When I have a look, I can make comments on the PDF that you upload and leave voice messages if you don't understand something, I can explain it again, just for you.

When you hand in your graded work after that, I can see that this time you now understand what you did not understand before and I can award you the grade that you have earned, which is usually not a '0'!!

13

Primary Sources again

It is important for historians to have primary sources because they can use them to tell and suggest things from the past.

How else can historians find things out? It is not like there are people from hundreds or thousands fo years ago to actually ask.

14

The 'tell' part of 'Tell and Suggest'

  • We can see things when we look at photos, or old things we find

  • They tell us things

  • They can only tell us what we can see though. We can't pretend to see things that are not there.

2

This picture does NOT TELL us that it is camels taking stuff from Egypt to Dubai. Because where are the signs?

3

This is a man walking on water who is walking slowly because of the heat

4

This is an old picture because it is black and white so it has to be taken a long time ago

Question image

This image TELLS me what? Pick two options

1

It is in Abu Dhabi

2

It is a roller coaster and the car is painted yellow

3

The tracks are painted white

4

It is at Ferrari World

18

What is does NOT tell us

You might know this picture is in Abu Dhabi because you have been to Ferrari World, but what about if you had not. It does not say 'Ferrari World' anywhere on the picture to tell you that it is there. So you CANNOT say that.

You can only TELL what IS there.

Secondary Sources

A secondary source is one that is not written to taken (like a photo, you take a photo) at the time of the event. It is done afterwards.

An example would be a textbook about Ancient Egypt written by an historian 10 years ago. He was not actually IN ancient Egypt. He is not that old.
