How does Reading with a purpose (having a reason to read) help you?

Before starting any reading, it is important to have a purpose. Why are you reading? Maybe it’s to find the main idea of a short story or to find out how a character saves their problem.   In any case the purpose is what you, as the reader, hope to accomplish by the end of the reading. Without a purpose, you can easily lose your train of thought and get to the end of a reading without ever knowing what you’ve even read.

How would texts be different if author's did not include tools for readers to make mental images?

Visualizing is especially valuable when it is applied to narrative texts. In reading narratives, readers often can develop a clear understanding of what is happening by visualizing the setting, characters, or actions in the plot. However, visualizing can also be applied to the reading of expository texts, with readers visualizing steps in a process or stages in an event or creating an image to help them remember some abstract concept or important name
