Dots

  • A dot is added behind a note to indicate the change of duration of a note.

Triplets

  • A triplet is a three-note pattern that fills the duration of a initially two-note pattern / typical two-note pattern.

  • Each note in the triplet has equal rhythmic value.

  • As an example, let us see the picture below~~

  • A triplet allows us to play three notes in the time of two notes. Every type of music note (like minims, crotchets, quavers etc) can be split up and divided into two equal beats.

Simple & Compound Time (tik..tok..tik..tok)

Simple Time

  • Simple time is the easiest to count, when you can subdivide the notes into two groups and again and again.

  • Also, a "one-two" pulse is the most natural to a listener & performer

Compound Time

  • In compound time, the rhythm can be broken into three part rhythms.

  • You can also determine the compound time when you see multiples of 3 (Eg 6, 9, 12) but not 3 itself.

  • Since each beat is divided into 3 parts, a "one-two-three" pulse is formed.
