​ Animal and fish raising is one of the sources of livelihood of many Filipinos especially in the rural areas. It is a small industry that can be done inone’s backyard or vacant lot with knowledge, skill and hard work. It can be a profitable business.

​1. Pollution

​

Animal waste that is not properly disposed and is left exposed in the backyard can produce a very unpleasant smell causing air pollution.

​

Likewise, the animal wastes can attract flies and insects which can be carriers of disease-causing bacteria and harmful microorganisms.

​2. Infection and Diseases

​

Flies and insects carrying disease-causing bacteria can settle on food and belongings of the family members, thus contaminating the food and belongings which can cause diarrhea, food infection, and other diseases.

​3. Fly and insect infestations

​

If not controlled, flies and other insects can multiply fast,then spread out in the community causing disturbance, stress, and diseases. Likewise, sick animals, if not properly treated, can pose danger to the health of people.

1. Animals commonly raised are hogs, cows, goats and carabaos.

​

2. Fish commonly raised include bangus, tilapia, hito, dalag, talaba, tahong, alimango, and shrimp.

​

3. Hazards posed by raising animals in nearly communities arepollution, infection and diseases, and fly and insect infestations.

4. There are ways to prevent or minimize the hazards mainly by implementing regularly a health and sanitation program for the animals.

5. The market demands for meat and fish are increasing due to increasing population.
