How sunlight affects plants
Plants need sunlight to make their own food.
If plants don't get enough sunlight, they will not be able to produce enough food for themselves and die.
If plants get too much sunlight they can dry out and die.
Different plants need different amounts of sunlight
3
Some plants need lots of light
Plants like cacti that live in the desert need lots of sunlight. Their thick stems help them store water so they do not dry out too easily.

Plants like mosses and ferns that grow on the forest floor don't need that much sunlight.

Sunlight and animals
Some animals need more sunlight than others.
Cold blooded animals like iguanas and other reptiles need to absorb heat from sunlight to stay active.
Their body temperature changes with their surroundings so they control their temperature by moving into the sun or shade as needed.
Animals with moist, wet skin like frogs and earthworms will dry out and die if they get too much sunlight.

Rain and living things
All living things need water.
Rain helps to fill up lakes, rivers, ponds and other places that animals, including humans, might use as sources of water.
Rain also soaks into soil, where plants will absorb the water with their roots.
Many animals will take cover ad hide from the rain.
Ducks and other water birds aren't bothered by the rain because of their oily feathers help them stay waterproof
Animals like snails and earthworms prefer the moist air after it rains.

Predicting Weather

when dangerous winds are coming so we can move to a safe area,
when farmers can plant crops,
when sailors and fishermen need to steer clear of storms at sea,
When to bring along a raincoat or umbrella,
And when to plan a PICNIC!
