​Grammar: Quantifiers

SOME, ANY, TOO MUCH/MANY, A LOT OF, A LITTLE, A FEW

Function: We use quantifiers to talk about amounts. Some quantifiers go with countable nouns, some go with uncountable nouns, and some go with both.

Large quantities

  • a lot of / lots of / plenty of - used in positive sentences with singular OR plural nouns


  • many
    - used in negative sentences or questions with plural nouns (girls, books, lessons etc.)

  • much - used in negative sentences or questions with uncountable nouns(water, time, money, information, equipment, furniture etc.)

Small quantities

  • a little - (meaning: some, a small amount); used with uncountable nouns

  • little - (meaning: not enough) used with uncountable nouns (milk, rice, )

  • a few - (meaning: some) used with plural countable nouns

  • few - (meaning: not enough) used with plural countable nouns (boys)

  • enough + noun (We have enough time.)

  • adjective + enough (You don't drive fast enough.)

  • too + adjective (You're too clever for this position.)

  • too much + uncountable nouns

  • too many + plural countable nouns

zero quantity

  • any + noun for a zero quantity with a negative verb (We don't have any French lessons.)

  • no + noun with a positive verb (They have no patience.)

  • none without a noun in short answers
