Wala: 3D shapes.

L.O: Identify and sketch different nets for a cube.

2

Starter: Feely bag

Resources: Variety of 3D shapes including cuboids and cubes, an opaque bag.

Description: Put a 3D shape into the bag without learners seeing it. Feel the shape and describe it slowly out loud using its mathematical properties. Describe the number of vertices, the number of edges and the 2D shape of one of the faces. Once all the properties of the shape have been described ask learners to predict the shape in the bag. Reveal the shape. Repeat with different shapes, making sure you include a cube and a cuboid.

3

Main Activity: Nets of cubes.

Learning intention: To identify and sketch different nets for a cube.

Resources: Resource sheet 6B

Description: Give one copy of Resource sheet 6B to each pair of learners. Ask learners to think about and discuss the shapes on the sheet and try to visualise how each shape will fold. They should put a tick beside each net they are sure is a net of a cube, a cross beside each one they are sure is not a net of a cube and a question mark beside those where they are unsure.

4

Main Activity: Nets of cubes.

Pairs of learners should draw a larger copy of the nets they are unsure about. They can then cut them out and fold them to check whether they are nets of a cube. Put pairs together to compare their answers. If there are any nets that the pairs disagree about, they should draw them and cut them out to check.

5

Main Activity: Nets of cubes.

Differentiation:

Support less confident learners by talking through the visualisation of different cubes. Start by identifying a square to be on the bottom then imagine folding up the other faces. Challenge more confident learners by asking them to cut out the nets of a cube and arrange them in a systematic order to see if there are any other possible nets missing from Resource sheet 6B. (All possible nets of a cube are on the sheet.)
