Undo Addition by Subtracting

​Example: 2 + x = 7

​

​2 + x = 7 *subtract by 2 on both

​-2 -2 both sides of the =

x= 5 * 2-2 = 0 & 7-2=5

​Solve for x.

• ​x + 4= 12

• ​9 + x = 12

• ​3 = x + 1

​It does matter what side of the = sign the variable is on! You still solve for the variable side, ALWAYS!

Undo Subtracting by Adding

​Example: -2 + x = 7

​

​-2 + x = 7 *add by 2 on both

​+2 +2 both sides of the =

x= 9 * -2+2 = 0 & 7+2=9

​Solve for x.

• ​ x - 4= 12

• ​-9 + x = 12

• ​ 3 = x - 1

• ​ 9x = 27
