Mannerism (1520 - 1580)
- Renaissance period ended with the Mannerism Movement in Italy between 1520 and 1530
- Reformation revival brought much political turmoil
- Wanted to bring a sense of security and show the turmoil of the time period
- Elongated figures to show suffering, heightened emotions and bring religious joy
- El Greco(Painter): Reflected the overall feelings of peopled during the Reformation time period.

The Baroque Period (1580 - 1630)
- Replaced the Mannerism movement
- Catholic reform movement adopted Baroque Period
- Can be seen in Catholic courts (Next slide)
- Baroque artists tried to blend the classical ideal of Renaissance art with the spiritual feelings of the 16th century
- Art reflected a lot of emotion along with creating a need for a search to power
- Baroque churches and palaces were GREATLY detailed and big

Wrote political work in 1690 called Two Treatises of Government
Did NOT believe in the absolute rule of ONE person
He believed that society was organzied humans lived in a state of equality and freedom not a state of war
He believed that humans had certain NATURAL RIGHTS. These included rights to life, liberty, and property
Believed that people agreed to establish gov't to ensure the protection of their rights
Gov't would protect the rights of people and people would act reasonably toward gov't
