Republic of​ Fredonia

The Fredonian Rebellion was the first attempt by Anglo-American settlers in Texas to secede from Mexico. The settlers, led by Empresario Haden Edwards, declared independence from Mexican Texas and created the Republic of Fredonia near Nacogdoches.

Haden​ Edwards

  1. An empresario who set up an independent republic in Texas, although he and his rebels were defeated, Mexican authorities were worried about a revolution.

​Meir y Teran Report

​Offered suggestions to make Texas less American and more Mexican, which were implemented in the Law of April 6, 1830.

General Don Manuel​ Meir y Teran

A Mexican patriot who visited Texas and issued a report (known as the Mier y Teran Report) that said American settlers had no respect for Mexico and he feared more settlers would revolt. He came up with steps for making Texas less American and more Mexican.

​Law of April 6, 1830

Mexico feared a revolution in Texas so they implemented laws such as canceling most empresario contracts and outlawed the bringing of enslaved African Americans into Texas.

​Tariff

Also in the Law of April 6, 1830, Mexico placed a tax (tariff) on goods brought in from other countries. This tariff/tax made imported goods from the United States more expensive than those made in Mexico.

Mexico sent more troops into Texas and set up 5 military posts in Texas known as garrisons.

Turtle Bayou Resolutions

After 2 Americans were arrested but not charged with a crime, angry Texans went to the Mexican fort at Anahuac to free the prisoners, but were denied. The resolutions claimed that Mexico was not following their own constitution and reforms were needed.
