TYPES OF PREPOSITIONS

Time: SHOWS WHEN SOMETHING HAPPENS

These Prepositions are used to refer to time in various aspects. (Eg- by, in, an, at, after, before, from, since, during, etc.)

Example: He reached at eight o’clock in the morning.

Place: show WHERE something HAPPENS

(On, at, in, by, from, to, towards, up, down, across, between, among, through, in front of, behind, above, over, under, below, etc.)eg-Sam was sitting under a tree.

​Preposition of Manner

Prepositions of form- By, With. . They usually provide an insight into what was used to make a specific thing happen.

Let's look at a few examples:

  • He faced the enemy with courage. (he was courageous when he met his enemy)

  • Ayush left the class in a flash. (Ayush was in a hurry when he left the class)

Prepositions are also used to answer the 'how' question. Here are some other examples.

  • Ramesh lost 2 kgs by going on an entirely vegetarian diet. (how did Ramesh lose 2 kgs? by eating a vegetarian diet)

  • Vishnu and Kapil went through the storm with courage. (how did Vishnu and Kapil go through the storm? with courage)

​The object of the preposition is the noun or pronoun that

comes after the preposition.

e.g.

Jenny found her pen underneath her school books.

The preposition is - underneath.

The object of the preposition is - (Jenny’s) her school books.

​Types of Preposition

Preposition like to, towards, through, into are used to describe the direction.

(On, at, in, by, from, to, towards, up, down, across, between, among, through, in front of, behind, above, over, under, below, etc.)

Example:

The man was walking his dog along the riverbank.

Preposition of Cause, Reason, Purpose

Preposition joins a verb with the noun and shows the reason for happening.

To: This is used to show the purpose of the noun. This preposition joins a noun with a verb.

Ex: Alesha gave a hundred rupees to her brother.

  • For: This word is also used to show the purpose of the noun and joins a noun with usually another noun or an adjective.

Ex: They went for an interview to get a job.

  • From: The word “from” is used to indicate distance or direction from separation, deprivation.

Ex: She is traveling from Hyderabad to Vijayawada.
