Infinitives

The use of infinitives in English

What is an "infinitive"?

An Infinitive is the verb form that has “to” at the beginning.

For example,

to do

to sleep

to love

to create

It is the simplest verb form that you have to modify to fit into sentences.

•learn: They are learning to sing.

•want*: I want to come to the party / I want him to come to the party.

•would like*: I would like to see her tonight / I would like you to see her tonight.

•promise: We promised not to be late.

Infinitives after adjectives

When you describe something with an adjective, an infinitive should follow.

​The most commonly used adjectives are:

​Incorrect: It’s hard changing a bad habit.

Correct: It’s hard to change a bad habit.

Correct: It is always difficult to score runs on this field.

Infinitives to indicate the purpose or intention of an action.

In this case TO has the same meaning as IN ORDER TO.

So, I plan to move to Spain next year to improve my skills.
