​ Some people have a favorite sport. Sometimes a country even has a favorite sport that many of its citizens participate in. One sport that is popular in Germany is Volksmarching. The translation of this word is "people marching." Volksmarching was begun in the early 1960s by a German sports club as a running event. It has evolved into what it is today, walking events that occur throughout the year in almost all the picturesque German cities and villages. Each Volksmarch is usually made up of two routes, a 10 km and a 20 km walk. Both day and night marches are held for the walkers. During the night marches, the walkers carry torches to light the way.
