​Using narative tenses

  • ​To write more stories based in the past, we use narrative tenses. The most common tenses are

    1. ​Past Simple

    2. ​Past Continuous

    3. ​Past Perfect Simple

    4. ​Past Perfect Continuous

​Past Simple

  • ​to talk about completed action/state in the past, series of actions that happened one after other in the past or to take the action of the story further.

  • ​eg: walked, bought etc

​Past Continuous

  • ​to set the scene of the story.

  • ​to talk about an action that was in progress in the past when another action interrupted it

  • ​eg: was + Verb + ing (was walking, were eating)

​Past Perfect

  • ​To talk about an action that happened before the time of the narrative or another past action.

  • ​eg: had + participle ( had walked, had eaten)

​Past Perfect Continuous

  • ​to talk about an action that was in progress for some time in the past which was interrupted by another past action, or which had an effect on a later event in the past

  • ​eg: had + been + verb + ing (had been trying, had been looking)
