One of our spelling words is tried. Tried is the past tense of the verb "try."

This is the rule: When you need to add -ed to a word that ends in "y," check the letter before the "y."

If the letter is a vowel, just add -ed after the "y".

  • stay > stayed

If the letter is a consonant, change the "y" to an "i" before adding -ed.

  • try > tried

  • cry > cried

Why can't I use "cause" instead of "because"?

The reason is that the word "cause" has a different meaning than "because" and is pronounced differently. Cause can be used as both a noun and a verb.

Cause - noun - the reason something happened

Ex. The cause of the flood was a hurricane.

Another definition of cause is something you want to support or help

Ex. I gave money to the charity because it was a good cause.

Cause - verb- to make something happen

Ex.  The hurricane caused the flood.
