Abigail Adams: (1744 – 1818) The wife of John Adams, the second president of the United States. Abigail Adams provided important advice to her husband, including suggestions that he support women's rights.

American Revolution: A movement that began in America in the mid-1760s, when colonists began to work to win independence from Great Britain. The rebellion led to the Revolutionary War and the creation of the independent United States.

Battle of Saratoga: An important turning point in the Revolutionary War. American colonists' defeat of the British in Saratoga, New York, led the French to enter the war on the side of the Americans.

Battle of Yorktown: The last major battle in the Revolutionary War. On October 19, 1781, British general Lord Cornwallis surrendered to George Washington and the Continental Army.

Continental Army: The official army of the American colonies during the Revolutionary War.

Friedrich von Steuben: (1730 – 1794) An army officer from the European country of Prussia who helped train the Continental Army at Valley Forge. His training was a major reason the colonists won the Revolutionary War.

​George Washington: (1732 – 1799) The leader of the American army during the Revolutionary War. He was elected the first president of the United States.

John Adams: (1735 – 1826) A major political leader during the American Revolution who helped win support for the Declaration of Independence. He served as the second president of the United States.

​John Jay: (1745 – 1829) An American political leader from New York. Jay helped reach peace with Great Britain after the Revolutionary War. He was a strong supporter of the U.S. Constitution and served as the first chief justice of the Supreme Court.

Loyalist: An American colonist who stayed loyal to British rule and opposed independence.

Marquis de Lafayette: (1757 – 1834) A wealthy Frenchman who fought with the Patriots in the Revolutionary War. Major financial supporter.

Patriot: An American colonist who wanted independence from the British.

Paul Revere: (1734 – 1818) An American businessman and Patriot. Revere strongly supported American independence from Great Britain and served with the Massachusetts militia during the Revolutionary War.

Revolutionary War: (1775 – 1783) The war fought by the 13 American colonies to gain independence from Great Britain.

Treaty of Paris: The agreement signed in 1783 between the United States and Great Britain, ending the Revolutionary War.
