When you’re sick, you may feel like everyone around you can tell.

Between your red, runny nose and teary eyes, it might seem like your face is a dead giveaway of how you’re feeling.

For a study, 22 participants were given an injection – some received bacteria while others were given a placebo (note: the injections didn’t make participants sick but led to an inflammatory response because it “tricked” their immune systems.) A  couple of hours after the injections, the participants each had a headshot taken. They wore no makeup and made no facial expression . For a second part of the study, each participant who received the bacteria injection the first time was then given the placebo, and those who received the placebo the first time received the bacteria injection. They were then photographed again.  A different group of more than 60 participants were then shown the first set of photos – each for five seconds – and were asked to determine if the individual in a picture appeared sick or healthy.

3

Poll

What percent of the people could spot someone who was sick by their photo?

Over 50%

Under 50%

4

They received an accuracy score of 62 %

Those in the photos who were given the bacteria injection were rated by participants as appearing to have paler features, redder eyes, a more tired expression and a more swollen face than those who were given the placebo injection.

Sometimes we can guess our client may be facing a health issue they don't always mark on their intake forms. The reason could be something the client is embarrassed to discuss with you ,not feel it's important or related to the service they are getting ,sometimes even fearful it may cancel their appointment or prevent them from getting a service they have been looking forward to.

These clients don't realize that medications and conditions could put us and them in jeopardy if modifications aren't made.

Diabetics have poor circulation, nerve damage and a slower healing time. This can mean they may not feel a temperature that is too hot and run the risk of burns during a service , reopening of wounds or pressure that may cause skin or muscle injury. Diabetics generally have weaker immune systems making them less able to fight infections. Scratching dry skin, another symptom, can cause small cracks for bacteria and fungi to enter. Common places of invasion are glands of eyelids, hair follicles, around nails, armpits, groin, and spaces between fingers and toes.

A xanthoma (pronounced “zan-thoma”) is  made up of immune cells called histiocytes. Histiocytes are specialized cells that help remove waste products from the body. The histiocytes in a xanthoma look much larger because they are full of lipids (fat) under the skin.  If you see yellowish-orange growths on the skin, it may be caused by a form of heart disease . These painless deposits can appear in many areas, including the corners of your eyes, lines on your palms, or the backs of your lower legs.

Hepatitis C affects your liver the most, causing outward signs like jaundice which causes yellowing of the skin and eyes. but it can cause problems with other body parts, too, including your skin. Bumps, rashes, and itchy spots may be the first signs you notice of this infection.

Lichen planus looks like purplish lesions or bumps with flat tops that spread across the skin over a period of a few weeks or months. They appear most commonly on the inner forearms, wrists or ankles, and may also appear on the genitals and in other areas. The rash is itchy and may also form blisters that burst. It’s not contagious, is unlikely to cause major complications, and will often disappear on its own. However, it can sometimes be linked to Hepatitis C.

Heavy alcohol use, toxins, some medications, and certain medical conditions can cause hepatitis. However, hepatitis is often caused by a virus.
