Heat in the Air
The atmosphere is the blanket of air that surrounds the Earth. We think of the atmosphere as a blanket, because just like a blanket, the atmosphere keeps the Earth warm. The atmosphere also moves and flows like water: if you watch a satellite time‐lapse of the clouds in the atmosphere, you can see how the move and swirl like water does.
4
Multiple Choice
A mixture of gases that surrounds the Earth like a blanket.
atmosphere
troposphere
ozone
nitrogen
5
Multiple Choice
The atmosphere moves and flows ________.
like clouds
like water
like air
like people
6
What is the cause of all of this warmth and movement in the atmosphere? It is the Sun. Energy from the Sun, including light, travels through space. When that energy reaches the Earth, some of that energy is transferred into heat. You can feel this effect every day when you go outside and stand in the Sun: you can feel the heat of the Sun on your face.
7
Multiple Choice
Energy from the Sun, including light, travels through_________.
the ocean
time
space
water cycle
8
We can measure the amount of heat in the atmosphere using a thermometer.
I. There are three main kinds of thermometers we use:
1. liquid thermometers
2. dial thermometers
3.digital thermometers
Temperature is measured in degrees (°) Fahrenheit and Celsius.
In science, we use the metric system of measurement, and the metric measurement for temperature is Celsius (C).

I. The Sun rises in the morning as the Earth rotates, or spins, on its axis.
As the Sun rises in the sky, energy from the Sun begins to heat the surface of the Earth.
Large bodies of water, such as lakes and the oceans, will absorb, or soak up, much of the Sun’s heat.
Land does not absorb heat as well as the water, and so the air above the land warms quickly from the Sun’s energy.
As the air above land begins to warm, it will also begin to rise.
As that warm air over the land rises, cooler air from above nearby bodies of water moves in to fill the space.
This movement of air is called wind.
It is wind, driven by the energy of the Sun that causes the Earth’s atmosphere to move and flow.
