What is a sentence?

​A SENTENCE is a group of words which makes a complete statement, asks a complete question or gives a complete order.

Examples:

  • The man ate the last burger.        (Complete statement)

  • Are you coming over to play?        (Complete question)

  • Do not play in the house!               (Complete order)

What is a phrase?

A phrase is a group of words that do NOT make a complete statement or ask a complete question or give a complete order.

Examples:

  • The man ate                 (Incomplete statement)

  • over to play?                  (Incomplete question)

  • in the house!                 (Incomplete order)

Types of Sentences

There are FOUR main types of sentences:

  1.   Declarative

  2.   Interrogative

  3.   Imperative

  4.   Exclamatory

Interrogative Sentences

An interrogative sentence asks a question. It ends with a question mark. ( ? )

 

Examples:

Ø Where are you going?

Ø What time is it?

Ø Can you help me with this problem?

Ø Will the man be able to finish his work?

Ø Did you have a good time at the party?

Declarative Sentences

A declarative sentence makes a statement. It ends with a period or a full stop. ( . )

 

Examples:

Ø The man was able to finish his work.

Ø Jerry opened the door.

Ø The weary traveller stood under a tree.

Imperative Sentences

An imperative sentence is an order, a command, a directive, or a request. It ends with a full stop.

 

Examples:

Ø Kindly pass the butter.

Ø Please leave the room quietly.

Ø Leave us now.

Ø Come here.

Exclamatory Sentences

An exclamatory sentence expresses a strong feeling. It is always followed by an exclamation point ( ! ).

 

Examples:

What a time we had!

My watch is gone!
