The Party of the People

The Democratic Party is the oldest existing political party in the United States. Some scholars say that it began when Jefferson founded the Democratic-Republicans in 1792. Jefferson opposed a strong central government.

The party later split. Some scholars say that the Democrat Party grew from a branch headed by Andrew Jackson.

Andrew Jackson

Andrew Jackson was an American lawyer, soldier, and statesman who served as the seventh president of the United States from 1829 to 1837. Before being elected to the presidency, Jackson gained fame as a general in the United States Army and served in both houses of the U.S. Congress. An expansionist president, Jackson sought to advance the rights of the "common man" against a "corrupt aristocracy" and to preserve the Union. He is one of the founders of the Democratic party. He ran for president in 1824 against John Quincy Adams, even though Andrew Jackson got more votes than Adams he still lost the election. When Jackson complained he decided to reform the Democratic-Republicans into the Democrats. Andrew Jackson ran for president again in 1828 and won against John Quincy Adams. Martin Van Buren was an American lawyer and statesman who served as the eighth president of the United States from 1837 to 1841. he had previously served as the ninth governor of New York, the tenth United States secretary of state, and the eighth vice president of the United States. He won the 1836 presidential election with the endorsement of popular outgoing President Andrew Jackson and the organizational strength of the Democratic Party. He was the third incumbent vice president to be elected president, and the last until 1988. He lost his 1840 reelection bid to the Whig nominee, William Henry Harrison, thanks in part to the poor economic conditions surrounding the Panic of 1837. Later in his life, Van Buren emerged as an elder statesman and an important anti-slavery leader who led the Free Soil Party ticket in the 1848 presidential election. He founded the Democrats along with Andrew Jackson. Fun fact he was also the first U.S. President to be born an American.
