Learning Target
Our learning target today is to learn how to solve two step equations and apply them to real life situations.
3
Agenda
Go over Vocabulary
I will demonstrate how to solve a two-step equation.
We will do a two step equation together.
You will be given a paper that has two equations on it and I want you to show your work on how you solved. You MAY use your notes I provided for you.
You will turn that paper into me before you leave class.
4
Vocabulary that we will use
Term: A single number or variable or a number and a varibale multiplied together.
Coefficient: A number multiplied by a variable
Constant: A value that does not change.
Variable: A symbol for a number we dont know yet.
5
How can two-step equations be used in real life?
Example: By the Morehead City Park there is a pole building and that is where the Morehead Farmers Market sets up to sell locally grown produce. It cost $10 dollars to rent a spot at the farmers market and plus they charge $7 dollars for every hour you are there. I stayed long enough for them to charge me $31 dollars. How could we write a two step equation for this scenerio to find out how many hours I stayed there? Any predictions?
6
Our equation would look like this
10+7(h)=31
7(h) is our term
The number 10 is our constant and represents the minimum cost for renting a spot.
The number 7 is our coefficient represents the amount you have to pay every hour you are there.
h represents our variable because its an unknow number of hours you stay. Because we aren't for sure how many hours woulf stay yet.
31 equals the total amount of money you would pay for being there.
7
Solving
So our equation is 10+7(h)=31
Lets go through the steps on how to solve!
8
Steps to Solve a Two Step Equation
Undo addition or subtraction (so do the opposite of what is being shown) to Isolate the variable on one side of the equation.
Make any operations (add, subtract, multiply, divide) the same on both sides of the equation. What you do on one side you must do to the other.
Ensure the coefficient of the isolated variable is positive one.
Check your solution!

Multiple Choice
10+7 (h) =31
1) Whats my first step?
Subtract 10 from itself and 31
Add 10 to itself and 31
Multiply 10 and 7
10
Multiple Choice
10+7(h)=31
What is h?

Question??
How can we check our answer?
12
Another one..
During the winter you charge people $12 to shovel snow. You then charge them $9 for every hour you are there. If you made $57 that day how many hours did you spend at that one house?
13
Multiple Choice
What would our equation look like for this scenerio?
12+9 (h)=57
12-9 (h)=57
12(9)=57
14
12+9 (h)=57 would be the correct equation.
So what is our first step in solving this equation?
How can we check our final answer?

Show me what you know!
I will now pass out this paper so that you can test yourself on how well you can do two-step equations. I want to see how well you can solve as well as how well you can apply them to real life so make sure you show me your work on question #2 and also show me how you checked your answer. Make sure you turn your papers into me before you leave. REMEMBER you CAN use your notes.
