The Republican Party was formed in 1854, when a man named Alvan E. Bovay brought together antislavery leaders. These leaders opposed the Kansas-Nebraska Act, which would permit slavery in these new territories if the people voted for it.

The party's candidate lost in 1856. The Republicans realized they needed more than one issue to win. In 1860, they still opposed slavery in the territories, but also called for a transcontinental railroad and free land to settlers.

​Horace Greeley

​Horace Greeley was an American newspaper editor and publisher who was the founder and editor of the  Tribune. Long active in politics, he served briefly as a congressman from New York and was the unsuccessful candidate of the new Liberal Republican Party in the 1872 presidential election against incumbent President Ulysses S. Grant, who won by a landslide. And he is also one of the three founders of the Republican party. He founded the party along with Alvan E. Bovay, and Henry Jarvis Raymond.

​Alvan E. Bovay

Alvan Earle Bovay was an American politician and one of the co-founders of the Republican Party. Born in Adams, New York, Bovay later attended Norwich University, in the mountains of Vermont, where he also received military training. He was admitted to the bar at Utica, New York, in July 1846. Four months later, in St. Luke's Episcopal Church in New York City, he married the daughter of Ransom Smith. He founded the party along with Horace Greeley, and Henry Jarvis Raymond.

​Henry Jarvis Raymond

Henry Jarvis Raymond was an American journalist, politician, and co-founder of The New York Times, which he founded with George Jones. He was a member of the New York State AssemblyLieutenant Governor of New York, Chairman of the Republican National Committee, and elected to the US House of Representatives. For his contribution towards the formation of the Republican Party. He also founded the Republican party along with Horace Greeley, and Alvan E. Bovay.

​Belief on Spending

​The Republican party believes in spending more on the Military and not on Government. The reason is that they believe that we would be safer if we have a Strong Military, but not a Strong Government, The Republicans believe that if we have a strong government that they would overpower the people.

​The Republican party believes that the United States Government should stay out of the American people's lives. Because the Democrats are constantly going through private information. That's why Republicans want the government to stay out of the American people's lives.

​The Republicans believe that we should have a secure border. they believe the illegal immigrants are stealing the American people's jobs and money, also they are getting free money from the Government. The Republicans wants more people to come to the country but they haft to come in legally.
