Lesson I Intervals
Do you still remember when you were a baby, your mother use to sing a lullaby in order for you to sleep?
Or the reason why you have a favorite song?
Or not just the lyrics/words of a song but you like the tune? You might have even joined in the singing by humming the tune?
6
What’s New
Today, we are going to learn a new song entitled.
7
· The song “Bayan Ko” was composed in 1928 when Filipinos were campaigning for independence from America under the leadership of President Manuel Quezon. The lyrics are based on a poem by Jose Corazon de Jesus. Enmeshed in the song are the yearnings of a people colonized for over 400 years, first as a colony of Spain and then as a colony of the United States. De Guzman likened that Motherland to a bird set free, the land returned to the rightful people, the true heirs of the islands. "Foreigners are intoxicated with your beauty, my country, my nest of tears of poverty. My steadfast wish is to set you free."

What is melody?
Listen to the sound of a chirping bird, a mother humming or singing a lullaby for her baby to sleep. How do you describe the sound? What can you say about the sound that you have heard?
Join in singing with the choir by humming. What do you observe about the sound? The sound that you heard like chirping bird, singing the lullaby by humming or imitating the tune is called melody.
Melody in music refers to the pleasing, recognizable succession of tunes in a song. It is an expression of composer’s thoughts and ideas. It is horizontal part in musical composition, which refers to the up and down movement of tones in the scale.
10
Why are melodies important?
Think about your melodies like a scene in a movie or play. Your chords create the scene and melodies are the characters on center stage that tell the story.
A good melody will capture and hold your listener’s attention. Songwriters and composers use melodies in your music tell stories and give audiences something to remember and connect with.
People sing songs as they march, play, or work. Farmers have songs from the time they till the land and prepare it for planting up to the time they harvest their golden grains of rice.
The songs of our country are part of the history of our country. Many Filipino composers make melodies about love of country. They also create melodies about how beautiful our country is.
11
What is interval?
INTERVAL is the distance between two given notes or the difference in pitch between any two tones. To get the interval, count the number of lines and spaces from the first note to the next note.
12
13
The number of lines and spaces in between the two notes determines the names of harmonic and melodic intervals. Count the number of lines and spaces starting from the given note at the bottom to the next note.
14
What I Have Learned
· Interval is the difference in pitch and distance in between two notes.
· Melodic intervals are two notes sounded one after the other. The notes are written or arranged in a horizontal direction.
· Harmonic intervals are two notes sounded together. The notes are written or arranged in a vertical manner.
