Solids are a form of chemical structure. It has a fixed volume and a specific shape. Solids can come in many forms. But most commonly, an ice cube. Everyone uses this as an example cause solids are just water, but frozen (or anything which is solid/hard). Which turns into a solid when it IS frozen. That's why everyone uses this as an example. But back to the lesson. When trying to do a question on a solid, remember that solids are everywhere. A solid can be a block of wood. For example: a solid block of wood occupies a specific volume and has a definite shape. If you were to move a block of wood, or if you place it in a different container, the block of wood would still have the same shape and still occupy the same volume of space. Same with all the other solids out in this world.

Liquids
Liquids are water. Just like gas, a liquid has no fixed shape. It takes the shape of its container. Though, a liquid does not have a fixed volume. If you have a pint of water in a glass, its volume is one pint and the shape is the same as the glass it fills. If you were to pour this water into a bowl it would be one pint. However, its shape will change to the shape of the bowl. Ice melting into a pile of water would be known as a liquid. Solids start then go into a liquid. Which liquids can become evaporated which then turns into air or gas.

Do you know what GASEOUS means? it means in the form of gas; of or like a gas. Gas is all around us just like solids are. The air is a gas. So is steam. Gas is useful cause we use it every day! We have to breath, right? Yep! Gas has no fixed shape of its own, as you can see to the right. It just takes the shape of its container. Though, gas also doesn't have a fixed volume either. If you were to put it in a container, it would just expand. it basically just floats around us like it owns this world.
