​ Biodiversity

​The term Biodiversity was first coined by Walter G. Rosen in 1986

​It originates from the Greek word

​ BIOS= LIFE and Latin word DIVERSITAS=VARIETY or DIFFERENCE

​The whole word BIODIVERSITY generally therefore means VARIETY OF LIFE

​Biodiversity is the degree of variation of life. It is a measure of the variety of organisms present in different ecosystem

​Types of Biodiversity

​Genetic Diversity

Variations of all living forms at the Genetic level​:genes,alleles or nucleic acid

​Species Diversity

​The number of different species that are represented in a given commuity

​Ecosystem Diversity

​refers to the variety of ecosystem

​present in a biosphere.

​the number of different ecosystem on Earth or in geographical area

​Patterns of Biodiversity

​Endemic Species- plants and animals that exist only in one geographic region

​Biogeography

​Biogeography-is the study of the distribution of the world's species both in the past and in the present

​Ecological Biogeography- studies the current factors affecting the distribution of plants and animals

​Historical Biogeography- studies the past distribution of speceies​

​Conservation Biogeography- focused on the protection and restoration of species based upon known historical and current ecological information

​Importance of Biodiversity

​1. Human Health-many medications are derived from natural chemicals made by a diverse group of organisms.

​2. Agricultural- Human have been breeding and selecting crop varities

​3. Wild food sources-Human obtain food from wild sources primarily of wild fish population
