Review: Present Simple VS Present Continuous

​The time-line diagram is used to demonstrate tenses throughout the text, with the vertical crossbar representing “now” or the “moment of speaking.”

Grammar Presentation

The present continuous expresses an activity that is in progress at the time the speaker is saying the sentence (is occurring, is happening right now). The event began in the past, is in progress right now, and will probably continue into the future. Therefore, we can also use present continuous to talk about future (plans).

​Forms: Subject + to be (am, is, are) + Verb-ing

​Statement: John is sleeping right now.

Question: is John sleeping right now?

Question with 5WH: Where is John sleeping right now?

Negative: John is not/isn’t sleeping right now.

​THE USES

​Use 1: To describe an activity in progress at the moment of speaking

Use 2: To talk about a temporary situation, happening around now but not necessarily at the moment of speaking

Use 3: To refer to planned events (this one is what makes it different from simple future tense using “will”. We use present continuous if the plan has already been arranged before it is going to happen) for the future

​Actually, "WILL" cannot be used in all contexts for future reference

​HOW ARE THEY DIFFERENT?

​But what is the difference? Are they all the same?

No. There is a difference in these 3 future tenses and the situations we use them for.

​WILL

​Use WILL for spontaneous decisions and plans made at the time of speaking.

I think I‘ll have sushi for lunch.

It’s getting late. I think I‘ll go home.

​

Use WILL to express yourself when thinking or considering plans.

I think I‘ll stay home tonight.

I don’t think I will come with you.

I will probably be really busy tomorrow.

​WILL

Use WILL for predictions; when we guess or believe something about the future.

I think I‘ll probably be really busy on the weekend.

I probably won’t be available tomorrow night.

​I think it will rain later so take an umbrella with you (based on weather forecast)

Use WILL to make an offer of help.

Don’t worry. I’ll help you move house.

Use WILL to show that you’re happy and willing to do something

I’ll pay for drinks tonight.

Use WILL to make promises.

Use WILL to show your determination to do something

A: You’re not going to get that promotion.

BE GOING TO

Use BE GOING TO when we have evidence or a sign that something is going to happen.

We can be sure that it is likely to happen. We can see that it is going to happen.

It looks like it‘s going to rain. (the sky is dark and cloudy: evidence)

BE GOING TO and PRESENT CONTINUOUS

Use BE GOING TO to talk about plans made before the time of speaking.

These are plans you have already arranged and maybe scheduled with other people.

a) We’re going to have lunch on Sunday./We’re having lunch on Sunday. I have booked a reservation.

b) I’m going to work on my project this weekend./I’m working on my project this weekend, my team already organized it.

c) They‘re going to meet us at the airport in two hours./They‘re meeting us at the airport in two hours, their team already set a place there.
