What is an adjective?

​คำคุณศัพท์ในภาษาอังกฤษ เรียกกันว่า Adjective หรือย่อว่า Adj. ทำหน้าที่ขยายคำนามหรือสรรพนามที่อยู่ในประโยค คำนามหรือสรรพนามก็คือ คน สัตว์ สิ่งของ สถานที่ นั่นเอง ทำหน้าที่ขยายในที่นี้เพื่อบอกให้รู้ว่าคำนามหรือสรรพนามเหล่านั้นมีลักษณะอย่างไร เช่น สูง ต่ำ ดำ ขาว ใหญ่ เล็ก เลว ดี ฯลฯ โดยคำคุณศัพท์ จะวางอยู่ในส่วนต่าง ๆ ในประโยคดังต่อไปนี้

Where is an adjective?

​1. เรียงไว้หน้าคำนามที่คุณศัพท์นั้นไปขยายโดยตรงได้ เช่น*The thin man can run very quickly.

(คนผอมสามารถวิ่งได้เร็วมาก) 

*A wise boy is able to answer a difficult problem. (เด็กฉลาดสามารถตอบปัญหาที่ยากได้) 

* The beautiful girl is wanted by a young boy. 

      (สาวสวยย่อมเป็นที่หมายตาของเด็กหนุ่ม)    

Where is an adjective?

​2. เรียงไว้หลัง Verb to be, look feel, seem, get, taste, smell, turn, go, appear, keep, become, sound, grow, etc. ก็ได้ Adjective ที่เรียงตามกริยาเหล่านี้ ถือว่าขยายประธาน แต่วางตามหลังกริยา เพราะฉะนั้นจึงมีชื่อเรียกได้อีกอย่างหนึงว่า Subjective Complement เช่น

           I'm feeling a bit hungry. (ฉันรู้สึกหิวนิดๆ)                    Sugar tastes sweet. (น้ำตาลมีรสหวาน)
