  • ​The Tainos (Arawaks) were found living in the Greater Antilles.

  • ​They are believed to have come from the northern banks of the Orinoco River in Venezuela.

  • ​The tainos were located in Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Cuba, Hispaniola

  • ​Some Tainos also lived in Trinidad

Tainos- Political System

  • ​The Tainos Chief was called the Cacique

  • ​The Cacique were generally aged men who were considered to be wise.

  • ​The Cacique acquired their powers through a hereditary system ( passed on from father to son, if their was no son, then the eldest son of the cacique's sister.

  • ​They ruled over the village and controlled the population.

​Kalinagos - Political System

  • ​The Kalinago Chief was called the Ouboutou

  • ​He was chosen for his prowess ( bravery), he had to endure pain and display fighting skills and expertise.

  • ​It was not passed down from father to son, he had to be elected

  • ​The chief's main duty was to organize the people in his community for hunting, fishing and war
