Institutionalism

- Institutions are social structures

that have attained a high degree

of resilience.

- There are three important kinds of institutionalism:

1. Old Institutionalism

2. New Institutionalism

3. Historical Institutionalism

- can be either formal or informal

media

22

Institutionalism

Institutional Actors -

They are the people who make decisions and who act in the name of the state – hence the more common term “actors” (Snyder et al. 1954).

Feminist Theory

- Charles Fourier was known to coin

the term feminisme.

- The theory, Feminism, seeks to

understand the nature of gender inequality.

- Gender inequality leads to gender oppression. This further elaborates how certain groups are privileged or disadvantaged because of gender.

media

26

Hermeneutical Phenomenology

- Hermeneutical phenomenology is a philosophy of and a method for interpreting human experiences as a means to understand the question of what it is to be human. This philosophy was developed by Martin Heidegger.

- The phenomenological perspective tells us to remove our preconceived ideas to arrive at a pure description of our experiences. Hermeneutical phenomenology, on the other hand, similarly seeks truth in things as experienced in the world.

27

Human Environment Systems

- This dominant ideology began with the study of ecology, natural

science.

- There is no clear definition for the human-environment system, as it crosses multiple disciplines at once such as ecology, sociology, and environmental demographics.

- Environmental sociology is typically defined as the sociological study of societal-environmental interactions. The primary thrust of this theory is that the two parties: humans and the environment are in a state of continuous interaction and integration.

28

Progress Check

Create an editorial cartoon that represents an idea on one of the dominant approaches discussed today. For example, ecology, economics, or even politics.

30

Generalization/Take away

The social sciences are not only composed of disciplines that showcase how it views and studies every facet of society. The disciplines prove how social science is applicable and practical, meaning that the social sciences are things that you can use every day to understand reality much better through these different dominant approaches and ideas which you have learned.
