A grand, epic tale of rocks turning into rocks because of rocks near it.

It's sedimentary!

FIRST, they're deposited or laid down in layers (river banks, deltas, coasts, or lakes).

THEN, they're cemented together like glue.

THEN, they're compacted together. Why? Because of the pressure weighing down on them from layers on top.

7

And metamorphic!

This type of rock is formed deeper in Earth's crust, under miles and miles of pressure!

The heat and pressure soften and warp them until they start changing chemically.

They're stronger/harder, sometimes sparkly or have shiny / smooth surfaces.

8

Annnd Igneous!

Eventually, rocks get "buried" so deep into the lithosphere that they just... melt!

This is what makes them magma, but they're not igneous rocks yet! Liquid, molten magma has to cool down back into solid rocks.

Depending on how fast they cool, we get different types and looks of igneous rocks.
