Articles

We use a/an the first time we mention something.

I’ve just bought a new washing machine.

We use the when we mention something which is known (because it has already been mentioned, for example and when there is only one of something.)

I bought a shirt and a tie. The shirt was quite cheap.

It was warm and the sun was shining.

We use no article (zero article) to talk in general about uncountable or plural nouns.

Tourism brings a lot of money to the country.

4

Quantifiers

We use a lot of, lots of, loads of and plenty of with uncountable and plural nouns to talk about large quantities. We often use plenty of to mean ‘more than enough’.

There are a lot of shops in my neighbourhood./ This is a lot of food to eat.

We don’t need to go to the supermarket. There’s plenty of food in the fridge. (= more than enough food)

5

Quantifiers

we use too much with uncountable nouns and too many with plural nouns in both spoken English and formal writing to say there is more than we want.

  -There’s too much noise here – I can’t work.

We also use much and many to ask questions about quantities.

-Were there many nice clothes in the sale?

6

Quantifiers

We use some to talk about neutral, non-specific quantities with uncountable and plural nouns.

-I’ve got some food. (= not a lot, not a little)

We use little + uncountable noun and few + countable noun to say ‘not much’ and ‘not many’ in formal, written English.

-We’ve got a little money left. Let’s get some ice cream.

-I have a few things to say.
