Multistep Equations

Students will be able to fluently solve multistep equations with one, none, or many solutions.

2

Important Vocabulary

Multistep problems

D.C.M.S

One Solution

No Solutions

Infinite Solutions

3

Steps for Solving

D - Distribute to parenthesis

C - Combine like terms

M - Move the variable to one side

S - Solve using inverse operations

4

Example Problems

1. 2x + 2(3x - 4) = 2x - 4

Distribute: 2x + 6x - 16 = 2x - 4

Combine: 8x - 16 = 2x - 4

Move Variables: 6x - 16 = -4

Solve: x = 2

2. 9x + 2(3x + 2) = 4x + 2(2-4)

Distribute: 9x + -6x + 4 = 4x + -4

Combine: 3x + 4 = 4x + -4

Move Variables: 4 = x + -4

Solve: x = 8

3. 6 + 8x = 4x - 2(4 + 3x)

Distribute: 6 + 8x = 4x - 8 + 6x

Combine: 6 + 8x = 10x - 8

Move Variables: 6 = 2x - 8

Solve: x = 7

5
