2Q-Module 1 Lesson 7: System Unit Disassembly and Assembly
by Gene Paul Cruz
2
Objectives
At the end of this module, you should be able to:
1. operationally define disassemble and assemble on the premise of computer system servicing;
2. identify the steps on how to disassemble and assemble a system unit; and
3. identify the steps on connecting peripherals of a computer.
3
Multiple Choice
Install the CPU
4
Multiple Choice
Remove CD/DVD drive
5
Multiple Choice
Remove the CPU fan and heatsink
6
Multiple Choice
Remove the Random-Access Memory (RAM)
7
Multiple Choice
Unscrew the screw at the back of the computer case.
8
Assemble
Assemble is the process of joining/putting together the separate component parts of a computer.
9
Disassemble
is the process of breaking down a device into separate parts.
A device may be disassembled to help determine a problem, to replace a part, or take the parts and use them in another device. For example, if a computer has a bad processor, you may need to open the computer case, disassemble the heat sink and processor, and manually replace it.
10
Steps in System Disassembly

11
Step 1: Unplug cables
For safety purposes, unplug the cables that are plugged in to the computer (power, USB, mouse, keyboard, internet, Ethernet, modem, AMFM antenna, and cable TV).
Move the PC to a clean work space.
12
Step 2: Open the outer shell/case
Unscrew the screws at the back of the computer chassis.
Remove the side panels
13
Step 3. Remove the system fan
Unplug the fan from the motherboard.
unscrew the fan from the outside part.
lift the fan out of the system unit.
14
Step 4. Remove the CPU fan and heatsink
Unplug the CPU fan from the motherboard.
Remove the fan along with the heat sink by unscrewing the four screws securing it to the motherboard.
15
Step 5. Remove power supply
Unplug all wires coming from the power supply connected to the motherboard, CD/DVD drives, hard disk drive and other parts.
Unscrew the four screws holding the power supply in place on the back of the computer. Push the power supply from the outside and then lift it out.
16
Step 6. Remove CD/ DVD drive
Unplug the Integrated Drive Electronics (IDE) ribbon or Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA) cable from the back of the drive.
Pull on the tab or unscrew the screws securing the drive-in place, then push it out from the inside.
17
Step 7. Remove hard drive
Unplug the IDE or SATA cable from the motherboard and the hard drive.
2. Pull on the tab or unscrew the HDD from the drive bay, then slide the HDD out.
18
Step 8. Remove the Random-Access Memory (RAM)
Push down on both tabs holding the RAM in place, which are located at both ends of the RAM.
19
Step 9. Remove the motherboard
Remove the screws securing the motherboard to the case.
Lift the motherboard out of the frame.
20
