The 3 long vowels in Arabic

​​حُرُوفُ ٌالْمَدِّ ثلاثة وهي

الألف الياء الواو

​The long vowels are three

In the Quran it's called the natural madd

المد الطٌَبِيعِي​

​​ٌأَلِفٌ، اٌلْيَاءٌ، اٌلْوَاو

​In the Qaaida An-Nooraaniyyah are called

Alif saakinah

Yaa saakinah​

Waw saakinah​

​أَلِفُ اٌلْمَدِّ

1. The letter before it always has fatha فَتْحَةٌ

2. ​Aliful Al-Madd has no vowels (it is called saakinah سَاكِنَة)

3. Aliful Al-Madd has no Hamza

4. ​Aliful Al-Madd carries the fatha sound longer

Example: ​​You read the letter with the fatha first then carry it longer with the Alif

ء فَتْحَةٌ ا ساكنة ​​ءَا

​ ب فَتْحَةٌ ا ساكنة بَا

​

​Q: What do we call the Alif?

A: Alif Harfu Madd. While reading from the Qaaida An-Nooraaniyyah it's called Alif saakinah

-  ماذا نسمي حرف الألف إذاً ؟!  ( حرف مد )

Now ​read the following:

أَ  _  آ	بَ _ با	تَ _ تا	ثَ _ ثا	جَ _ جا	حَ _ حا	خَ _ خا
دَ _ دا	ذَ _ ذا	رَ _ را	زَ _ زا	سَ _ سا	شَ _ شا	صَ _ صا
ضَ _ ضا	طَ _ طا	ظَ _ ظا	عَ _ عا	غَ _ غا	فَ _ فا	قَ _ قا
كَ _ كا	لَ _ لا	مَ _ ما	نَ _ نا	هـَ _ ها	وَ _ وا	يَ _ يا

​So when you hear the letter with a long Fatha sound you should put Alif next to it.

ياءُ اٌلْمَدِّ

​

1. The letter before it has always kasrah كَسْرَة

2. ​Yaa'o Al-Mad has no vowel (it is called saakinah).

3. ​Yaa'o Al-Mad carry the kasrah sound longer

​

Example: ​​You read the letter with the kasra first then carry it longer with the Alif

ف كَسْرَة ي ساكنة ​​فِي

​ ي كَسْرَة ي ساكنة يِي

Q: What do we call the Yaa?

A: Yaa Harfu Madd. While reading from the Qaaida An-Nooraaniyyah it's called yaa saakinah

​Now read the following:

ضِ _ ضي	طِ _ طي	ظِ _ ظي	عِ _ عي	غِ _ غي	فِ _ في	قِ _ قي
كِ _ كي	لِ _ لي	مِ _ مي	نِ  _ ني	هـِ _ هي	وِ _ وي	يِ _ يي

​​So when you hear the letter with a long Kasra sound you should put Yaa next to it.

1. The letter before has always dammah ضَمَّة

2. Waw Al-Mad is saakinah. It means it doesn't have any vowel

3. Waw Al-Mad carry the sound of dammah longer

Example: ​​

ه ضَمَّة و ساكنة هُو

​ و ضَمَّة و ساكنة وُوا

​

وَاوُ اٌلْمَدِّ

​Q: What do we call the Waw?

A: Waw Harfu Madd. While reading from the Qaaida An-Nooraaniyyah it's called waw saakinah

-  ماذا نسمي حرف الواو  إذاً ؟!  ( حرف مد ) 

​Now read the following:

So when you hear the letter with a long Dammah sound you should put Waw next to it.
