Effects of Environment on the Life Cycle of Organisms
Living things can survive only in environments that sustain their needs. Humans, animals, and plants live in different environments with different environmental conditions. This includes air, water, soil, sunlight and predators that present challenges to the organisms living in that environment. Organisms have to exhibit adaptations for survival. Changes in an organism’s environment may affect the existence and life cycles of living things.
10
Describe the two pictures.
11
Would you like to have an environment like this?
12
How do environmental changes and human activities such as deforestation; illegal logging, and kaingin, affect the life cycle of organisms?
13
Who do you think is responsible for these activities?
14
What do may happen if these human activities and practices persist?
15
Human activities like deforestation, illegal logging, or kaingin destroy places where these organisms live. Such activities may result to shortage of food resources that can cause animals and plants to perish.
Pollution releases chemical that are harmful to humans, animals and plants. Polluted areas are breeding places for organisms that carry diseases. Plants will not grow healthy and strong in contaminated soil.
16
The actual gas or substance that causes air pollution is called a pollutant. Here are some of the major pollutants:
Sulfur dioxide - One of the more dangerous pollutants, sulfur dioxide (SO2) can be generated by burning coal or oil. It can cause acid rain as well as respiratory illnesses like asthma.
Carbon dioxide - Humans and animals breathe out carbon dioxide (CO2). It is also released when fossil fuels are burned. Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas.
17
Carbon monoxide - This gas is very dangerous. It is odorless and is produced by cars. You can die if you breathe too much of this gas. This is one reason why you should never leave your car running in the garage.
Chlorofluorocarbons - These chemicals are also called CFCs. They were used in many devices from refrigerators to spray cans. They are not used as much today but caused significant damage to ozone layer during the time they were heavily used.
Particulate matter - These are tiny particles like dust that get into the atmosphere and make the air we breathe dirty. They are linked to diseases like lung cancer.
18
Too much use of pesticides and aerosols kills insects. These insects such as bees and butterflies are pollinators and are essential in the life cycle of plants. Without plants, humans and animals will not survive.
Illegal killing, trapping, or capturing of animals is Poaching. Animals, like elephants, rhinoceros, and tigers are poached and hunted for commercial purposes. These animals will reduce in number and may go extinct.
Climate change and global warming affect living things. Abrupt changes in the temperature may result to dizziness or even heat stroke.
When Earth gets warm, ice beds found on polar areas melt faster. The homes of polar bears and other animals are destroyed, and their regular breeding patterns are disturbed.

TOPIC: Effects of the Environment on the Life Cycle of Organisms
OBJECTIVE: Show the effects of the environment on the life cycle of organisms.
SITUATION: The Rufous-headed hornbill is a Critically Endangered bird living in the rainforests on the islands of Negros and Panay in the Philippines. A critically endangered (CR) species is one that has been categorized by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as facing an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild.
SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT WEEK 6
38
You will act as an animal protector by making an announcement (blog post) to show how the environment affects the extinction of this animal. In this way you are also encouraging everyone to do their part to protect other organisms.
