One-Step Equations

​By the end of today's class,

I will be able to solve one-step equations.

​Equations are like a balance scale

• ​It shows that both quantities are equal.

• ​When solving for an unknown number, what you do to one side of the equation, must be done to the other side to keep it balanced.

  • >> If you were to subtract 1 from the left side of the balance scale, you would also need to take away 1 from the right side of the balance scale.

• Say each blue circle is 1 unit weight.

• If the right side of the scale is 7 unit weights,

• What is the weight of box marked x in order to keep the scale balanced?

• We can also solve this equation by subtracting 2 from both sides of the equation.

• ​On the balance scale, take away two unit weights (blue circles) from both side of the scale.

• ​When we take away 2 from one side of the scale/equation, we must also take away 2 from the other side to maintain balanced.
