Unit 10 Writing Study

AES Grade 5 English

​This writing method can be used to join a main idea with examples of what the main idea is talking about. It has the structure below:

​(Main idea phrase), (Joining Phrase), (Example 1, example 2.. and example x)

​​

​So at the end of the main idea phrase there is a comma (,) then the joining phrase with another comma (,) after then the examples which have comma's (s) plus and before the last example.

​

​Joining phrases include: for example - for instance - such as etc...

​From page 105 of the student book some example sentences which are missing commas and how they should be corrected:

​1) INCORRECT: Maria can play many team sports such as basketball, baseball, and soccer. ​CORRECT: Maria can play many team sports, such as, basketball, baseball, and soccer.

​2) INCORRECT: I like many different vegetables for example peas, cabbage, and carrots. ​CORRECT: I like many different vegetables, for example, peas, cabbage, and carrots.

​3) INCORRECT: My aunt has a lot of interests such as reading, singing, and travelling. CORRECT: My aunt has a lot of interests, such as, reading, singing, and travelling.

​​4) INCORRECT: They visited several places for instance Korea, Turkey, Jordan and Mexico. CORRECT: They visited several places, for instance, Korea, Turkey, Jordan and Mexico.
