What is jazz?
Jazz is a mix of three things:
Improvisation
Syncopation
Blue notes

Improvisation means making up your own music on the fly. Many of the crazy jazz solos you hear are improvised.
Improvisation
Syncopation is playing notes off of the beat. Any notes that are played off of the beat are syncopated.

When someone plays a blue note they are playing different versions of Mi, La, and Ti. These are notes that are used in jazz music.

Jazz originated in New Orleans, Louisiana.
It combined elements of African, and European music.
Where did jazz come from?

Jazz got syncopation and blue notes from African music traditions.

There are two different sections in a jazz band: a rhythm section and a wind section.
