In your own words, define 'Gentrification'. Why is it controversial?

The movemnt of higher social or economic groups into an area after it has been renovated and restored, which might result in the out-migration of the people who previously occupied an area.

Gentrification

Woodstock (Inner Cape Town), South Africa

Woodstock covers an area of less than 5 square kilometers and has a population of over 11, 500 with a density of 2300 per sq. kms.

The arrival of railway line, Woodstock became a fashionable seaside suburb known for its beach area.

19th Century

The place grew rapidly due to its harbour access, improved transportation and industrialisation. e.g. Woodstock Glas Factory

1870s and 1880s

The place had ceased to be a seaside resort, but many moved into the place in the 1970s and 1980s creating an urban renewal in 1900s.

1950s

An urban area where existing buildings are either renovated or demolished and rebuilt.

Lucio Costa, a French-born urban planner led the development of Jacarepagua with Barra da Tijuca as its center.

A place for rich middle class from Rio de Janeiro with mountain views, forests, lagood and 20 km beach frotn.

Decentralisation

The 2016 Olympic Park was built on the lowlands of Jacarepagua to the west of Barra.
