CP- L1.5 Family of Elements
By: Ms. Bailey
2
Objective: classify elements into families based on their properties.
TEKS 8.5(B): identify that protons determine an element’s identity and valence electrons determine its chemical properties, including reactivity
TEKS 8.5(C): interpret the arrangement of the Periodic Table, including groups and periods, to explain how properties are used to classify elements
Some text here about the topic of discussion
3
Today we will explore how elements are grouped together into families based on properties such as color, metallic character and reactivity.
Specifically, understanding how elements are grouped based on reactivity, will help us answer the chapter question.
4
Lesson Vocabulary
Chemical reactivity (or reactive): the likelihood of an element to undergo a chemical reaction with another substance
Alkali Metals: highly reactive metal elements in group 1
Alkaline Earth Metals: relatively reactive metal elements in group
Halogens: reactive nonmetal elements in group 17
Noble gases: non reactive nonmetal elements in group 18
Chemical reactivity (or reactive): the likelihood of an element to undergo a chemical reaction with another substance

Multiple Choice
Chemical reactivity is...
the likelihood of an element to undergo a chemical reaction with another substance
the unlikelihood of an element to undergo a chemical reaction with another substance
the likelihood of an element to not undergo a chemical reaction with another substance
6
Multiple Choice
Nobel gasses are....
non reactive nonmetal elements in group 18
reactive nonmetal elements in group 18
non reactive nonmetal elements in group 1
reactive nonmetal elements in group 1

Halogens are...
reactive nonmetal elements in group 17
reactive nonmetal elements in group 18
reactive nonmetal elements in group 19
8
Multiple Choice
What is chemical reactivity?
the likelihood of an element to undergo a chemical reaction with another substance
the unlikelihood of an element to undergo a chemical reaction with another substance
the likelihood of an element to not undergo a chemical reaction with another substance
9
Multiple Choice
What are alkali metals?
highly reactive metal elements in group 1
highly reactive metal elements in group 2
highly reactive metal elements in group 3
10
The Periodic Table of elements organized elements into families (or groups) based on their properties. Elements in the same family have similar physical and chemical properties.
11
The most reactive elements are found in groups 1 and 2. These elements will readily react with other substances in a chemical reaction. Group 18 elements (noble gases) are the least reactive and rarely participate in chemical reactions.
