​Today we will explore how elements are grouped together into families based on properties such as color, metallic character and reactivity.

Specifically, understanding how elements are grouped based on reactivity, will help us answer the chapter question.

​The Periodic Table of elements organized elements into families (or groups) based on their properties. Elements in the same family have similar physical and chemical properties.

​The most reactive elements are found in groups 1 and 2.  These elements will readily react with other substances in a chemical reaction.  Group 18 elements (noble gases) are the least reactive and rarely participate in chemical reactions.
