Rocks are hard pieces of the earth's surface.
A rock is made up of different minerals.

Rocks come in many shapes and sizes.

Forms when hot, melted rock cools.
The melted rock comes from the deep in earth.
A volcano is an opening that allows melted rock to come to the surface.
The melted rock cools and hardens.

It is often speckled, has shiny crystal spots, has a rough surface.

Mount Rushmore is a famous granite mountain in South Dakota. Huge faces of four United States presidents have been carved in the side of this mountain.

It forms from the shells and bones of sea animals. The shells and bones break apart after the animal die. When pressed together, the bits os shell and bone form limestone.

This is a rock that is made when layers of sand get pressed together.

Sometimes fossils are found in sedimentary rock.
A fossil is any part or mark of a living thing that is naturally preserved after it dies.
