Poll

Bella and Tia began the week with the same amount of money. Bella paid $9 to go to the movies. Tia spent $2 on snacks and $7 on a new T-shirt. Do Bella and Tia have the same amount of money left?

Yes

No

I have no idea what this question is asking me.

4

The answer was yes, they do.

Because they both started with the same amount of money, lets call it m, for money. and then they both spent $9. Bella spent all $9 at once, and Tia spent it in 2 purchases, $2 and $7.

Bella and Tia began the week with the same amount of money. Bella paid $9 to go to the movies. Tia spent $2 on snacks and $7 on a new T-shirt. Bella and Tia had the same amount of money left over.

How could we represent this problem with an equivalent expression?

6

media
m - 9 = m - (2+7)

Remember m was the variable given to the amount of money they started with. Which was unknown. All we know, is that it was the same amount of money.

7

Fill in the Blanks

Using the equivalent expression from before:

m - 9 = m - (2+7)

How much money would each of them have left over they started with $20?

Type answer...

8

Equation

a mathematical sentence that shows that two expressions are equivalent.

(an equivalent expression like the one we just used to solve the last problem)

The scale at the top would represent an equation that have both sides of the equal (=) sign balanced, or equal to each other.

Balanced / Equal

Think of an equation like a balance scale.

4 + 5 = 6 + x

What is the value of x if both sides are balanced?

Type answer...

13

We know that x = 3 because...

4 + 5 = 9

so if 6 + x = 9

then x would be the difference between 9 and 6.

It looks like this...

We need to get x by itself 6 + x = 9

Subtract 6 from both sides

6 - 6 + x = 9 - 6

x = 3

Multiple Choice

Question image

Ben buys tickets for the outdoor skating rink as shown. Each ticket costs the same amount. How much does 1 ticket cost?

What information do we know?

Ben bought ___ tickets for $___

1

1 ; $72

2

2 ; $38

3

4 ; $72

4

3 ; $62

15

Open Ended

How would we write and equation to solve for c, for the COST of 1 ticket?

16

Divide by 4 to both sides

When solving for c and it is attached to a COEFFICIENT like this. We know that this means 4 times c. So, to get c by itself we must divide it by 4.

We need to solve for c

4c = $72

Does everyone understand why we divide by 4 to get c by itself?

17

Solution of an Equation

a value that makes the equation true.

(like in the last example and we solved for c in 4c = $72 and c was equal to $18, the solution was the value of c)
