Sharma works in an office and is extremely dissatisfied with a lot of things in his life. Therefore, he constantly arrives late for work and also avoids doing any at all. One day, he gets into a big problem with his boss and the personnel officer, because they grow tired of his contemptuous attitude and shameless skiving. Somehow, once more he manages to cunningly talk himself out of the situation, and even offers to change his ways. How much of what he says is true or false is still in doubt, but in the end, at least he seems to have found a new source of inspiration in life.

The story is set in Delhi, India. It does not clarify a specific time, but we can argue it is somewhat modern, because of the presence of women in positions of command. Such a thing is not usual in an extremely conservative society like the Indian. However, they still have to sign an attendance register, instead of just using their fingers or cards in a biometric system. These details, together with the year of publication, could indicate that it is set around the 1980’s.
