In biology, detritus is dead particulate organic material, as distinguished from dissolved organic material. Detritus typically includes the bodies or fragments of bodies of dead organisms, and fecal material. Detritus typically hosts communities of microorganisms that colonize and decompose it.

Decomposers and detritivores like fungi, bacteria and beetles are important to the ecosystem because they

1

Convert radiant energy to chemical energy

2

Take in Carbon Dioxide and produce oxygen

3

Break down dead and decaying organisms and adding nutrients back to the soil

Multiple Choice

What does an energy pyramid represent?
1
Food pyramids show the different food chains in a community.
2
Energy pyramids show the same total matter at all levels.
3
Shows the amount of energy available at each feeding level in an ecosystem.

Multiple Choice

Question image

Why can't the top level of the energy pyramid contain a large number of organisms?

1

Because as energy moves from the bottom to the top level, less and less energy is available to higher levels.

2

Because the original energy from producers is the total energy available to all the organisms in the energy pyramid.

3

Because only about ten percent of the energy available at one level is transferred to the next level.
