In Acevedo’s poem “Whispering with Caridad Later that Day”, the distinct differences between the girls can be seen. In the back-and-forth conversation, the girls sounded like a mother and daughter discussing the “rules,” as Xiomara referred to them. Xiomara told her friend of the boy with warm arms, and Caridad cautioned her that she was “trying to protect her from herself” (Acevedo 2020). This poem shows that it was not the only religion that separated the girls’ beliefs.
