We use "and" to connect two similar ideas.

-The girl is tall and thin.

-I like waffle and cheesecake as a dessert.

We use "but" to join two contrasting ideas.

-They like swimming but I hate milk.

-I like cheese but I hate milk.

-Penguins swimm well, but they can't fly.

We use so to introduce the consequence or the result of something. The second part of the sentence is the result of the first part of the sentence.

  • It was cold, so I turned on the heating.

  • I turned on the heating because it was cold.
